UNFORGETTABLE MULTICULTURAL BOOKS FOR CHILDREN, GRADES K-6
In the scramble to discover children's books that our students will find compelling, books that introduce multiethnic characters with dignity and appeal, and titles that we can integrate into the curriculum, teachers and librarians can be overwhelmed with the sheer variety. In her thoughtful and thought-provoking presentation, children's book reviewer/writer Judy Freeman will highlight her latest favorite multicultural titles.
Judy will also demonstrate innovative, motivating, and practical ways to integrate these books into every aspect of the classroom and school library curriculum, through curricular and literature appreciation tie-in activities that include reading aloud, booktalking, storytelling, creative drama, Reader's Theater, poetry, music, writing, illustrating, and other book-based activities designed to bring books and children together.
She will also compile an original, comprehensive, annotated bibliography and handout that incorporates a wide range of ideas for using exemplary multicultural children's literature and send the district or library a master copy to be duplicated for each participant.
